Pāua shells are a type of abalone shell known for their multicolored mother-of-pearl (nacre). Their iridescent interiors display overlapping shades of blue, green, turquoise, and purple, created by the layered structure of the shell rather than a uniform surface pigment.
These shells feature a flattened, ear-shaped profile with a row of natural respiratory holes along one edge. The nacreous surface makes them useful for shell collections, coastal displays, jewelry components, decorative mosaics, and mother-of-pearl inlay work.
