Sculptural Shells for Elegant Displays & Coastal Crafts
$24.00
This is the shell that wears the ocean’s rhythm, a dancer frozen in mid-motion. The Wavy Turban Shell is not content with a simple, smooth edge; instead, it finishes its solid, graceful form with a magnificent, undulating ruffle. It is a thick, sturdy shell, a classic turban shape, but its defining feature is the series of elegant, regular waves that cascade around its opening, like the petticoat of a Victorian dress or the gentle, rolling swell of a calm sea. Its surface is a canvas of earthy sophistication, often a blend of creamy whites, soft browns, and subtle grays, sometimes with delicate bands of color that follow the contours of its form. This is a shell that celebrates movement and grace, a piece of natural sculpture that captures the fluid energy of the water in its solid, permanent form.
From the Shore
Discovering a Wavy Turban Shell is a moment of tactile delight. You spot its unique, scalloped profile against the sand, and you know instantly that it’s something special. When you pick it up, the first thing you do is run your finger along its distinctive, wavy edge. You can feel the regular, rhythmic pattern of the ruffles, a satisfying and sensory experience. You turn it over in your hand, appreciating its solid weight and the subtle, blended colors on its surface. Selecting them is a search for the most graceful dancers. You look for shells with the most pronounced, even waves and a beautiful, harmonious blend of colors, knowing that each one is a perfect little sculpture shaped by the tides.

Each of these shells is a piece of the ocean’s art gallery, sustainably and ethically collected. They are crafted from natural Spotted Marbled Cone snails (Conus ebraeus), celebrated for their unique, dappled patterns and elegant conical form. Please remember that as a natural product, every shell will have its own unique variations in shape, size, and the beautiful patterns on its surface. These are the marks of a treasure, individually painted by the sea.

The species name undosa is Latin for “wavy” or “full of waves,” a perfect and direct description of the shell’s most famous feature. It’s a wonderful example of a scientific name that is both accurate and poetic.
This species is native to the Pacific coast of North America, primarily found from central California to Baja California. It is also known as the “Wavy Top” or “Undulated Turban.”
Like other turbans, the Megastrea undosa has a thick, shelly operculum, often called a “cat’s eye.” When the snail is alive, this hard, circular “trap door” is used to seal the shell opening for protection. These operculums are often collected and used in jewelry and crafts themselves.
The Wavy Turban is edible and is considered a delicacy in some parts of its range, particularly in Baja California, where it is harvested for its meat.
